Many international investors, business owners, remote professionals, freelancers and families see Oman as a calm and stable base in the Gulf. Oman residency through company registration or Golden Visa can mean two very different legal paths.
The first path is an ordinary investor or owner residence linked to an Omani company. The second is Oman’s official Golden Residency. It is a renewable 10-year programme for people who meet an approved investment or business condition.
The right choice depends on your main purpose. You should compare business use, investment level, duration, family rules and ongoing duties before you apply.
Simple decision logic
- You plan to run a real business: an ordinary company-linked residence may fit your plan.
- You want a renewable 10-year status: check if you meet a Golden Residency investment or business condition.
- You want residence but no business or qualifying investment: neither path should be chosen without checking other visa types.
- Your family will join you: compare the family rules before you choose the main applicant’s route.
If your purpose is still unclear, a residency route assessment in Oman can help you compare the available paths before you pay government or third-party costs.

At a glance
| Point | Ordinary company-linked residence | Golden Residency |
|---|---|---|
| Main basis | Ownership or investment in an active Omani company, with the required approvals | An approved Golden Residency investment or business track |
| Main purpose | Running and managing a business in Oman | Long-term residence linked to a qualifying investment or business condition |
| Duration | A shorter renewable period under the approved visa category | 10 years and renewable under the programme rules |
| Investment test | No single Golden Residency capital threshold, but the company must meet its own legal and activity rules | The current programme states a minimum of OMR 200,000 for capital-based tracks; some tracks have a separate condition |
| Business use | Designed around a real commercial structure | Golden status alone does not replace a commercial registration or activity licence |
| Family | Family residence uses the normal joining rules and approvals | The current official programme offers wider family inclusion |
| Ongoing duties | Maintain the company, licences, records and residence status | Keep the qualifying investment or condition and follow programme rules |
Important: a commercial registration does not give automatic residence approval. It also does not give automatic Golden Residency.
How company-linked residence works
This route starts with a company that has a real business purpose. The company may provide services, trade, manufacture, import, export or carry out another approved activity.
The owner or investor then applies under the visa category available for that company and applicant. The authorities review the company documents and the visa file. Nationality, activity, company status and other approvals can affect the result.
A commercial registration is only one part of the process. A foreign-owned company may also need an investment licence, activity approvals, a suitable address, Chamber registration and other records. The exact list depends on the activity and place of registration.
If you plan to operate a real company, Oman company setup advisory can help you review the structure, activities and residence plan together.
If the only purpose is to keep a residence card, the company route can create costs and duties that the applicant does not want. A cheap or fast registration is not always the right decision. The company still needs a clear activity, valid records and a structure that can be maintained.
Key distinction: This is an ordinary company-linked residence. It is not the Golden Residency company-investment track.
How Golden Residency works
Oman’s current Golden Residency programme gives a renewable 10-year residence to approved applicants. The official programme lists seven main paths:
- owning completed property in an Integrated Tourism Complex;
- starting or investing in a company in Oman;
- buying Oman Government Development Bonds;
- buying securities listed on the Muscat Stock Exchange;
- keeping a fixed-term deposit with a licensed Omani bank;
- owning a business that employs at least 50 Omani citizens; or
- receiving a qualifying company nomination under the Foreign Capital Investment Law.
The official programme states a minimum capital level of OMR 200,000 for its capital-based routes. A route based on employment or nomination has its own conditions. Forming a low-cost company does not meet the Golden Residency test by itself. Read about one specific Golden Residency route if you are considering the company-investment path.
A Golden Residency eligibility assessment can help you check the investment form, evidence and family plan before an application is prepared.
The investment amount is only one part of the file. The source of funds, ownership papers, financial documents, applicant profile and selected route must support each other.
Eligibility differences
For an ordinary company-linked residence
- You must be an owner, investor or other eligible person in the company file.
- The company must have valid registration and the approvals required for its activity.
- A foreign investment licence may be required. The current government service asks for items such as a passport copy, feasibility study, experience, a bank statement and a lease contract.
- The visa application remains subject to approval by the competent authorities.
For Golden Residency
- The main applicant must be at least 21 years old.
- The applicant must qualify under an official programme track.
- The applicant must prove the investment or the special business condition.
- The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion reviews the investment conditions before the visa stage.
- Royal Oman Police issues the investor visa after the required certificate and approval.
Meeting a headline amount does not guarantee approval. The asset, ownership evidence, source documents and applicant file must match the selected track.
Costs and investment
Company-linked route costs
There is no single official total for every company-linked residence file. The total can include:
- commercial registration and activity fees;
- Chamber and investment-licence costs;
- sector or municipality approvals;
- visa, medical and resident-card costs;
- address, office or lease costs where required;
- tax, accounting and renewal costs; and
- optional professional support.
The Oman company setup cost calculator can show a planning estimate for a mainland company and ordinary investor residence. It does not calculate Golden Residency investment thresholds.
Golden Residency costs
The current official Golden Residency programme states a minimum investment of OMR 200,000 for capital-based paths. The type of asset and evidence still matter.
The government service page lists a visa fee of OMR 500 for a 10-year investor visa. This visa fee is separate from the investment. Application support, valuation, legal work, banking, property or company costs may also apply.
Do not mix these two figures: OMR 200,000 is the stated minimum investment for capital-based Golden Residency tracks. OMR 500 is the listed government visa fee for the 10-year investor visa.
Duration and renewal
An ordinary company-linked residence has a shorter renewable cycle. The exact period comes from the approved visa category and issued record. The residence normally remains linked to a valid company and its approvals. Do not plan on a 10-year term only because you own a company.
Golden Residency is issued for 10 years under the current programme and can be renewed. Renewal still depends on meeting the rules in force at that time and keeping the qualifying basis.
Both paths require valid personal documents and timely action. A longer card does not remove the need to keep the legal basis of residence.
Business activity
The company-linked route is usually the clearer choice when your main plan is to trade, provide services, employ staff, sign local contracts or build an operating company.
The company must use approved activities. Some activities need a special licence, local qualification, office, sector approval or staffing condition. Mainland and free-zone rules can also be different.
Golden Residency is a residence status. If you qualify through property, shares, bonds or a deposit, this does not by itself give you permission to carry out every business activity. A separate company and activity licence may still be needed.
Mainland or free zone
For the company route, mainland registration is usually more practical when you want to serve clients inside Oman, provide local services, sign local contracts or build an operating office in the country.
A free zone may fit export, international trade, manufacturing, logistics, warehousing or a regional business model. The company’s activity, customer location, office need and long-term plan should guide this choice.
Neither structure is always better. This choice should be made for the business model, not only for the residence application.
Family differences
Under the normal joining-relatives service, a valid resident can apply for a husband, wife or children under 21. The file needs proof of relationship and valid residence documents. The exact sponsor documents depend on the main resident’s category.
The current Golden Residency programme gives wider family inclusion. Official programme information says the holder can include a spouse and children without limits on age or number. The authorities still review each family member’s documents.
In practical terms, many families value Oman, especially Muscat, for its safety, calm daily life and lower level of pressure than some larger regional cities. This lifestyle point can matter as much as the visa period.
Family planning should also include housing, school, health insurance, transport and daily living costs. Visa cost is only one part of the total plan.
Maintenance after approval

Who each route may suit
Company-linked residence may suit you if
- you have a real business plan;
- you need a local company for contracts or trade;
- you accept yearly company duties and shorter renewal cycles; and
- you do not need the special benefits of the 10-year programme.
Golden Residency may suit you if
- you want a renewable 10-year status;
- you meet a qualifying investment or business condition;
- you want wider family inclusion; and
- you can keep the investment and related evidence for the required period.

Frequently asked questions
Does company registration automatically give Oman residence?
No. The company and the residence application are separate approvals. The company must be valid, and the applicant must qualify under an available visa category.
Does a normal Omani company give 10-year Golden Residency?
No. A normal company can support an ordinary investor or owner residence. The Golden Residency company path has a separate investment test and approval process.
Is Golden Residency always better than a company-linked residence?
No. Golden Residency may fit a person who wants long-term status and can keep a qualifying investment. A company-linked route may fit a person whose main purpose is operating a real business.
Is OMR 500 the cost of Golden Residency?
OMR 500 is the government visa fee listed for a 10-year investor visa. It is not the qualifying investment. The current official programme states a minimum of OMR 200,000 for capital-based Golden Residency tracks.
Can my family join me?
Both paths can support family residence, but the rules are different. Normal joining rules apply to an ordinary resident. The current Golden Residency programme offers wider inclusion for a spouse and children.
Can a Golden Residency holder run a business?
A Golden Residency holder can invest and may own a company. The residence card does not replace the commercial registration, activity licence or sector approval needed for business operations.
Does either route lead automatically to Omani citizenship?
No. Company-linked residence and Golden Residency are residence statuses. They do not create an automatic right to Omani citizenship.
