Opening a bank account for an Oman free-zone company is not a separate legal entitlement. Banks apply their own KYC, AML, sanctions and risk rules, and they decide independently whether the company file is clear enough to onboard.
A free-zone licence can support the story, but it does not replace proof of ownership, source of funds, premises, customers, suppliers, expected transactions and the reason the chosen zone fits the business.
Best preparation: make the banking file explain the same business that the zone licence, project documents, customs route and financial model describe.
For the wider location and zone-selection context, use the Oman Free Zones: Guide for Foreign Investors.
1. What a bank is really testing
| Bank question | Evidence that can support the answer |
|---|---|
| Who owns and controls the company? | CR, constitutional documents, shareholder records, UBO declaration, IDs and ownership chart. |
| What does the company actually do? | Zone licence, activity description, project summary, website/profile, contracts and invoices. |
| Why this free zone? | Lease/usufruct, warehouse or office evidence, logistics or industrial rationale. |
| Where will money come from? | Shareholder bank statements, audited accounts, investment resolution, loan/equity documents. |
| Who will pay the company? | Customer contracts, LOIs, purchase orders, expected countries and currencies. |
| Who will the company pay? | Supplier contracts, quotations, machinery orders, service agreements. |
| How large are the flows? | Turnover assumptions, expected transfer sizes/frequency and working-capital cycle. |
| Does the trade route make sense? | Customs/Bayan, warehouse/3PL, shipping route and product approvals where relevant. |
2. Start with the entity and ownership file
- Commercial Registration and current zone licence;
- Memorandum / Articles or constitutive contract;
- authorised-signatory evidence and account-opening mandate where required;
- shareholder passports/IDs;
- ultimate beneficial owner information;
- ownership chart for layered corporate structures;
- corporate shareholder documents and board resolutions where relevant;
- FATCA/CRS and PEP declarations when requested.
National Bank of Oman currently lists CR, OCCI, constitutional documents, passport/ID, utility or tenancy evidence and proof of income among its corporate KYC refresh requirements. BankDhofar likewise publishes ownership, FATCA/CRS, address and authorised-person requirements. These are examples of bank-level KYC, not a universal checklist for every bank.
3. Prove that the company has a real operating base
A zone company should be able to explain where it works and what the premises are used for. For an office company this may be a lease and address. For a warehouse or industrial project it can include the facility agreement, project allocation, utility or implementation evidence.
| Business type | Useful substance evidence |
|---|---|
| Office/service company | Office lease, staff plan, customer contracts and business correspondence. |
| Trading/re-export company | Warehouse or 3PL agreement, customs route, suppliers, buyers and cargo plan. |
| Manufacturing company | Land/unit agreement, machinery plan, project schedule, permits and raw-material/customer evidence. |
| Large project company | Usufruct or project agreement, financing/equity plan, contractor/offtake evidence and approval timeline. |
4. Build a one-page transaction narrative
A bank should not need to reverse-engineer the business from dozens of documents. Prepare one short narrative that explains the expected flows.
- what the company sells;
- main customer types and countries;
- main suppliers and countries;
- expected annual turnover range;
- typical incoming and outgoing transfer size;
- main currencies;
- whether trade finance, LCs or guarantees may be required;
- whether related-party payments are expected;
- whether goods enter Oman, remain in the zone or are re-exported.
5. Source of funds and source of wealth
The bank can ask how the shareholder obtained the money being invested and where the company funding originates. The evidence depends on the shareholder and transaction.
| Funding source | Possible evidence |
|---|---|
| Personal savings | Bank statements, employment/business income evidence and investment trail. |
| Existing company profits | Audited financial statements, bank statements and board resolution. |
| Shareholder equity injection | Subscription/investment resolution and transfer trail. |
| Shareholder or bank loan | Loan agreement, lender evidence and repayment terms. |
| Project investor / strategic partner | Investment agreement, shareholder documents and source-of-funds evidence. |
6. Trading and re-export companies need a cargo story
A free-zone trading company with no explanation of stock, customs or logistics can look incomplete. If goods are central to the model, show where they arrive, where they are stored, whether they are re-exported or sold into mainland Oman, and who is responsible for customs.
Use the free-zone mainland-sales guide when the company expects Oman domestic sales.
7. Manufacturing and project companies need project evidence
For an industrial company, account opening can be easier to understand when the bank sees a coherent project file: site, activity, machinery, construction schedule, customers or offtakers, suppliers, equity and financing plan.
The free-zone project-document checklist explains how to prepare the wider project file.
8. Common red flags
- the licence says one activity but the banking story describes another;
- high projected turnover with no commercial evidence;
- complex ownership with no clear UBO explanation;
- large cross-border flows with no reason for the countries involved;
- no premises, warehouse or 3PL evidence for an inventory business;
- tax exemption presented as proof that the business is low risk;
- a residence card presented as if it guarantees bank approval;
- source-of-funds documents that do not match the shareholder or transfer path.
9. Timing cannot be guaranteed
There is no safe universal number of days for a corporate account. Review time depends on the bank, ownership structure, residency, sector, countries, source of funds, expected transactions and the quality of the file.
A simple company with transparent owners and clear Oman activity can be different from a project company with corporate shareholders, multiple jurisdictions, trade finance and regulated products.
10. Bankability checklist
| Area | Ready when |
|---|---|
| Ownership | Shareholders and UBO chain are documented. |
| Authority | Signatories and account-opening authority are clear. |
| Premises | Lease/usufruct/warehouse evidence matches the activity. |
| Business | One-page narrative explains the operating model. |
| Customers | Contracts, LOIs or credible pipeline evidence exists. |
| Suppliers | Supplier/project documents support the model. |
| Funding | Source of funds/wealth is documented. |
| Transactions | Countries, currencies, values and frequency are explained. |
| Customs/logistics | Cargo route and importer/exporter responsibilities are mapped. |
| Compliance | Regulated activity/product approvals are identified. |
11. Frequently asked questions
Does an Oman free-zone licence guarantee a bank account?
No. Banks decide independently under their KYC, AML, sanctions and risk policies.
Do I need an Oman residence card before applying?
Requirements differ by bank and company. Residence can help with identification and access, but it should not be presented as a universal legal precondition or guarantee.
Does a tax exemption make banking easier?
Not by itself. Banks still need to understand ownership, business purpose, source of funds and transactions.
Can a company open an account before commercial operations start?
Project companies may apply during setup, but the bank can ask for project, premises, funding and implementation evidence.
What if the company has corporate shareholders?
Prepare the corporate ownership chain, constitutional documents, resolutions, authorised signatories and UBO evidence.
Why does a bank ask for a lease or tenancy document?
Address and premises evidence helps the bank confirm the company exists and the operating model is coherent.
Can one bank reject a company that another bank accepts?
Yes. Banks have independent risk appetites and internal onboarding policies.

Oman Verified works with international investors and companies across Oman company formation, free-zone and industrial projects, banking preparation, source-of-funds structuring, KYC readiness, compliance and ongoing business requirements. The banking file is prepared around the company’s ownership, activity, transactions, premises and project evidence, while the final onboarding decision remains bank-specific.
