Opening a Corporate Bank Account for a SOHAR Freezone Company

Modern commercial office building in SOHAR Freezone, Oman

A SOHAR Freezone company does not receive a bank account automatically. The bank still reviews ownership, source of funds, activity, premises, customers, suppliers and expected transactions.

For the wider SOHAR location and project context, use the SOHAR Freezone Investor Guide.

This article focuses on the SOHAR-specific file. For full national banking context, use Opening a Corporate Bank Account for an Oman Free Zone Company.

1. Start with the SOHAR entity file

SOHAR’s published investor material says a local bank account is part of the setup/operating journey and lists company documents that can support bank onboarding.

  • Commercial Registration;
  • SOHAR Freezone licence;
  • OCCI certificate where applicable;
  • authorised-signatory evidence;
  • shareholder/UBO IDs and ownership chain;
  • constitutional documents;
  • bank account-opening mandate or board resolution where required.

2. Add premises and project evidence

Trading/re-exportWarehouse/3PL, Bayan/customs plan, suppliers, customers and expected cargo.
ManufacturingLand/property agreement, machinery, project schedule, utilities/permits and customers/offtake.
Large projectProject agreement, equity/finance plan, contractors and implementation milestones.

3. Explain why SOHAR fits the company

The bank should understand why the business is in SOHAR rather than receiving only a zone licence. Port logistics, warehousing, industrial land, export manufacturing or a customer/project inside the SOHAR ecosystem can provide the commercial rationale.

4. Prepare the transaction profile

  • expected annual turnover range;
  • incoming/outgoing transfer frequency;
  • main currencies;
  • customer and supplier countries;
  • related-party transactions;
  • trade-finance/LC/guarantee needs;
  • cash exposure, if any;
  • expected customs and shipping flows.

5. Source of funds remains independent

Prepare evidence showing how the shareholder or corporate group generated the capital being invested. A free-zone tax benefit or investor residence is not a substitute for source-of-funds evidence.

6. Trading companies should map customs and inventory

If the banking story says regional trading, the file should explain where goods enter, where they are stored, whether they are re-exported or sold to mainland Oman, and who controls the inventory.

7. Timing is bank-specific

Do not publish or promise a fixed number of days. Bank review depends on the owners, residency, countries, sector, transaction profile, source of funds and quality of the file.

8. Frequently asked questions

Does SOHAR guarantee a bank account?

No. Banks make independent onboarding decisions under their own KYC, AML and risk rules.

Is a SOHAR licence enough for bank onboarding?

No. Ownership, source of funds, premises, business model and expected transactions are also commonly relevant.

Does the investor need a residence card first?

Bank policies differ. Residence can affect practical onboarding, but it should not be described as a universal guarantee or rule.

Can a pre-operational factory open an account?

Potentially, if the bank can understand the project, ownership, funding, premises and implementation evidence. The bank decides.

Should a trading company show customs documents?

Where goods are central to the business, customs/Bayan and logistics evidence can help explain the operating model.
