A family joining visa in Oman lets an eligible foreign resident bring a husband, wife or child under 21 to live in Oman.
The visa is linked to the main resident. The main resident is often called the principal sponsor or family head. The family member’s right to stay depends on this person’s valid residence status.
The process has four parts: entry approval, entry into Oman, residence-card steps and later renewal. Marriage or birth documents alone are not enough. The sponsor’s status and all supporting records must also be accepted.
Check the order before you apply
- Confirm that the principal sponsor has valid residence in Oman.
- Confirm that the spouse or child fits the correct family route.
- Prepare and authenticate the relationship documents.
- Apply for entry approval, then complete the residence steps after arrival.

What the family joining visa means
The family joining visa is a residence-linked entry route. It allows an approved spouse or child to enter Oman and live as a dependant of the principal sponsor.
Entry approval and residence are connected, but they are not the same step. The visa gives permission to enter under the approved family category. After arrival, the family member must complete the required residence-card process.
Important: A family member’s residence normally stays linked to the principal sponsor. A cancelled, expired or unresolved sponsor residence can stop a new application or renewal.
Who can normally sponsor family members
The principal sponsor must hold a valid Oman residence position that supports family joining. The current Gov.om service refers to a foreign resident, landlord or investor working in Oman.
In practice, the correct route depends on the sponsor’s residence type. A foreign employee, investor, long-term investor or qualifying property owner may use different records or a separate family service.
The sponsor should check the passport, visa, resident card and any employer or investment record before starting the family file. The sponsor’s documents should remain valid during the application.
Sponsor conditions and salary checks
The newer Gov.om joining-relatives page lists a valid passport, valid sponsor residence, proof of relationship and an employer letter where the employment route applies. It does not show a minimum salary.
The older ROP visa-information page still says that an expatriate employee should have a senior job, suitable rented housing and a monthly salary of at least OMR 600.
Practical check: Official public pages do not show the same level of detail. Do not use an unofficial salary table as a promise of approval. Check the sponsor’s occupation, salary, housing and residence type in the live ROP process.
Eligible family members
Husband or wife
A legally married spouse may apply when the sponsor and relationship documents meet the rules. The names, dates and passport details should match the marriage certificate.
Children under 21
The current Gov.om and ROP information says that the ordinary route covers children under 21. Start early when a child is close to the age limit.
Parents, siblings and other relatives
Parents, siblings and other relatives are not part of the normal spouse-and-child route. Gov.om has a separate Family Visa service for some relatives. Approval is at the authority’s discretion and may need more evidence.
A foreign wife of an Omani citizen and family members of a qualifying property owner may also have separate routes. Their documents and conditions are different.
Required documents
The current Gov.om service lists these main documents:
- Digital photograph of the family member.
- Copy of the family member’s passport.
- Copy of the principal sponsor’s passport.
- Copy of the principal sponsor’s Oman resident card.
- Proof of the family relationship.
- Employer letter accepting responsibility where the employment route requires it.
The authority may ask for more records based on the sponsor and the family situation:
- Authenticated marriage certificate for a spouse.
- Authenticated birth certificate for each child.
- Legal Arabic or English translation.
- Oman Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication.
- Employment record, profession and salary evidence.
- Housing or tenancy evidence.
- Medical certificate or medical-fitness record where required.
- Custody, consent, divorce or name-change documents where relevant.
Preparing marriage and birth documents
Relationship documents often take the most time. A valid certificate may still need legal authentication before ROP can use it.
- Check that all names match the current passports.
- Check dates of birth, marriage dates and parent names.
- Complete authentication in the country that issued the document, when required.
- Complete Oman Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication, when required.
- Use an accepted legal translation when the document language is not accepted.
- Add records for a previous marriage, divorce, custody or legal name change.
Application sequence
- Check the sponsor: Confirm the sponsor’s passport, residence visa, resident card and work or investment status.
- Choose the correct route: Use the spouse-and-child route only when it fits the case.
- Prepare civil documents: Correct name differences and complete authentication and translation.
- Check medical rules: Confirm whether the applicant needs a medical certificate before travel or another medical step.
- Submit the application: Use the official ROP or linked Gov.om service and upload the required records.
- Answer any request: Add employer, salary, housing or other records when requested.
- Pay the fee: The current published visa fee is OMR 30.
- Check the issued visa: Review the name, passport number, visa type and travel dates.
- Travel to Oman: Enter during the period shown on the issued visa.
Steps after arrival in Oman
After entry, the family member must complete the residence process. The exact steps can depend on age, nationality and the sponsor’s route.
- Keep the original passport and entry record ready.
- Complete any medical-fitness step requested by ROP or the Ministry of Health.
- Attend the required ROP or civil-status appointment.
- Complete identity, photograph or biometric steps where required.
- Pay the residence-card fee.
- Check the name and expiry date on the issued card.
The Ministry of Health states that children under 16 do not need the medical-fitness form for a visit or residence visa. Older children and adults should check the rule for their nationality and visa route.
The ROP public visa page lists an approved medical certificate for adults from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Syria and Nepal. The live system should be checked because medical procedures can change.
Residence card for the family member
Every foreign resident in Oman must obtain a residence card. ROP says the card should be obtained within 30 days of entry.
The applicant may need to attend in person with the original passport and application record. Rules for young children can be different.
The current Gov.om service shows an OMR 11 card fee. The ROP residence-card page explains that OMR 11 is the fee for a two-year card. Late action may cause a fine.
Renewing dependent residence
Renewal keeps the family member’s residence active for a new period. It does not fix an expired or cancelled principal sponsor status.
The current Gov.om renewal service lists these main conditions:
- The family member must be inside Oman.
- The family member’s passport must normally be valid for at least six months.
- The principal sponsor’s residence must be valid.
- The current published renewal fee is OMR 30.
The renewal file normally includes the family member’s passport copy and photograph, plus the principal sponsor’s passport and resident card.
When the principal sponsor’s status changes
A job change, work-visa cancellation, company closure, investor-residence expiry, property sale or final departure can affect the family member’s file.
Plan the sponsor’s new status before cancelling or renewing the family residence. The order matters. A gap in the principal residence may block the dependant’s renewal.
A spouse on family residence should not treat the family card as a work permit. Paid work needs the correct labour approval and employment residence.
Common application and renewal problems
- The wrong family visa category was selected.
- The sponsor’s passport, visa or resident card is close to expiry.
- The marriage or birth certificate is not authenticated.
- Names, dates or passport numbers do not match.
- A child is close to the age limit.
- The employer letter is missing or does not match the sponsor record.
- Salary, profession or housing evidence is incomplete.
- The medical certificate is missing, expired or not accepted.
- The family member already has another active Oman visa.
- The family member is outside Oman when renewal is requested.
